An afternoon of materials.

Six seats in Darmstadt. A selection of around forty aromatics across families – citrus, floral, wood, resin, spice, gourmand, green. We open them slowly and smell our way through. By the end of the afternoon, you have 10 ml of your own composition, and after 2-3 weeks we bottle 30 ml of your final formula. No previous experience needed, only a nose and a bit of curiosity.

what happens

2.5 – 3 hours

We start with a short briefing on natural perfumery – what counts as natural, what doesn't, why certain materials are precious. Then the materials come out family by family, so the nose has time to settle between very different smells. You sketch a brief: a mood, a memory, an image. I help you choose the materials that match. We build, smell, adjust, and in the end, you leave with a 10-ml bottle or 2-3 variations in 5-ml or 3-ml-bottles, and the full formula.

At home, your perfume keeps changing over days, sometimes weeks – the materials bind together and the blend becomes rounder. The light top notes stepping back a little is something we already account for when formulating. As soon as your perfume is finished macerating and you have chosen one of the possible variations, you can order a 30-ml-bottle with your final formula, starting from €45.

Pine forest by the north sea

One participant brought a pleasant memory from her early childhood – walking through pine forest close to the north sea. We didn't have pine absolute on the bench that day, so she approximated with pine needle essential oil and oakmoss absolute, which together carried something of the green and damp underneath the trees. She found most joy in the oakmoss and in litsea cubeba (long-lasting, lemon-fresh) and built three variations around them, each with a different top – litsea, bergamot, lime – to find the one that sat closest to the memory.
